Russian Law Week at the Law Society of England and Wales, London, UK

On 14-16 November 2016 the Law Society of England and Wales hosted the Russian Law Week ‘Establishing Bridges in Challenging Times’. The leading experts and lawyers from Russia and the UK discussed recent developments in the Russian law. Svetlana London gave a talk on ‘Developments and Current Trends in the Russian Court System’ within the session dedicated to the recent changes made to the Russian litigation legislation.

XI Forum of Corporate Lawyers, Almaty, Kazakhstan

On 3-4 November 2016 the CIS London team participated in the XI annual Kazakhstan Forum of Corporate Lawyers that took place in Almaty.

The programme involved round table discussions, case analysis sessions and workshops held by the best lawyers and business coaches of the CIS region. In particular, Svetlana London hosted two sessions: a workshop on the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme that had recently become available for Kazakhstani lawyers and a workshop on Managing international legal projects. It was a delight to see the participants showing sincere interest in both topics.

Minsk Legal Forum: From 'Fiery Eyes' to 'Dead Volcanoes', Minsk, Belarus

The CIS London & Partners team has attended Minsk Legal Forum that proved to be a new platform for ‘live non-legal communication in legal circles’. Practicing lawyers and representatives of legal businesses from Europe and Asia have discussed their views on the legal profession and legal business development in various regions. Svetlana London gave a talk on CIS qualified lawyers’ career and business prospects in the UK.

Roundtable ‘Developing of the national legislation of Kazakhstan’, London, UK

Svetlana London and Kulzhan Mehrabi took part in a round table organised by the Legislation Institute of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan together with Reed Smith law firm. The leading lawyers, solicitors and barristers have discussed various challenges of as well as approaches to developing new Kazakhstani legislation on the basis of the common law principles. Svetlana presented a comparison of English and Kazakhstani law provisions regarding M&A deals.

This topic is of a particular interest to companies and the government of Kazakhstan as well as to foreign investors, especially in relation to Astana International Financial Centre being established.

First Legal Forum of Black Earth Belt region, Voronezh, Russia

Our team has participated in the first regional legal forum that took place on 7-8 October 2016 in Voronezh. The forum was organised as a networking platform for lawyers of Central and South regions of Russia.

Svetlana London took part in the ‘Legal firm management: life hacks’ panel by giving a talk on managing quality of the legal services.

Getting the Deal Through: Fintech 2017

An international legal resources centre ‘Getting the Deal Through’ has recently launched a new series of annual reports on financial technology (‘Fintech’), which is a relatively new concept that involves a broad range of business types.

‘Getting the Deal Through’ developed the same key questions to be answered by the leading practitioners in each of the jurisdictions featured. The CIS London team has contributed by providing answers on Russian law.

European-Asian Law Congress, Ekaterinburg, Russia

CIS London & Partners team attended the 10 European-Asian Law Congress that took place on 9-10 June 2016 in Ekaterinburg, Russia. This year the topic of the congress was ‘Law, politics and economics in the modern world: changes of the XXI century’. Svetlana London gave a talk on international and national legal business standards and participated in a panel session that discussed problems of international and national business regulations in the modern world.

Guest lecture in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine

Svetlana London was invited as a guest lecturer by the Law Department of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv to give a talk on English law and legal career development to the students and academic personnel. Svetlana presented a review of the main principles of the Anglo-Saxon law and discussed legal career perspective on the local and international market.

Information session on MBA (Legal Services), Almaty, Kazakhstan

CIS London & Partners run an information session on MBA (Legal Services) within the Education and Career exhibition in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 8 April 2016.

Svetlana London, managing partner of CIS London & Partners, gave a talk on the main aspects of the MBA programme and answered the questions of potential students.

Guest Lecture in KAZGUU University, Astana, Kazakhstan

Svetlana London was invited as a guest speaker to KAZGUU University, one of the leading law universities in Kazakhstan. The two day joint event was held for the staff, professors, Ph.D. candidates and postgraduate students of the University. Svetlana gave a talk on English law and career development and had very positive feedback from the audience.

RMBC seminar ‘Success in Russia’, Birmingham, UK

Svetlana London and Valeria Ivasikh of CIS London & Partners LLP have attended Russian Midlands Business Club's "Success in Russia" seminar on 23 March in Birmingham, where Svetlana addressed the audience with an overview of Russia and other CIS countries' legal framework.

In particular, Svetlana touched on Russia's recent data protection and media ownership restrictions, as well as the more general matters of ongoing civil law reform and legal due diligence of Russian companies.

Advising International Russian Clients seminar, London, UK

Svetlana London gave a talk on ‘Technical updates: Advising Internationally Mobile Russian Clients’ within STEP’s Advising International Russian Clients seminar, kindly hosted by KPMG in London.

East Ukrainian Legal Forum of the Ukrainian Bar Association, Kharkov, Ukraine

CIS London & Partners team attended the Eastern Ukrainian forum of the Ukrainian Bar association that took place on 11-12 March 2016 in Kharkov. The forum consisted of several panel discussions and a business breakfast where Svetlana London presented the unique MBA (Legal Services) program. It was a delight to see the audience being genuinely interested in the topic.

Asset Protection - Safeguarding business & family capital seminar, Moscow, Russia

CIS London & Partners ran a joint seminar with Mishcon de Reya on asset protection and wealth planning. Our colleagues from MdR have shared their experience in setting up the structures for safeguarding business & family capital. CIS London team has given the Russian law perspective, namely, the possible consequences and taxation issues of setting up international structures for Russian residents (including the application of the CFC rules).
