May 2014

Sponsoring the Victory Day evening on board HMS Belfast, London, UK

Our firm sponsored Russian veterans on the Victory Day evening in London on board HMS Belfast. The ceremony was a part of the Victory Day London project dedicated to the Arctic Convoys, the solidarity and the joint efforts of the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy of Great Britain and Russian Navy servicemen, whose actions were an impressive and valuable contribution to the victory over fascism.

Participation in 4th Annual Conference "Russia & CIS private clients" organised by Academy & Finance, Zurich, Switzerland

Svetlana London gave a talk on “Setting up effective structures for family philanthropy in Russia: a legal and financial perspective” covering development and evolution of family philanthropy in Russia, legal framework and challenges of funding long-term projects through endowing foundations and maximising efficiency through multijurisdictional structures confirming each subject on case study.

February 2014

Workshop with Osborne Clarke LLP "Working with Russian clients", London

On 26 February 2014 we ran a workshop on co-strategy for UK litigation cases from a Russian perspective; enforcement of judgements in Russia and internationally; and conflict of laws from a Russian perspective.

Workshop with Withers LLP "Working with Russian clients", London

On 24 February 2014 we ran a joint workshop with Withers. The workshop included practical advice and information on recognition and enforcement of foreign awards and judgements in Russia, the challenges of working with Russian and Kazakh clients as well as litigation and arbitration funding in Russia.

Stephenson Harwood LLP "Russian disputes in London - for how much longer?", London

On 27 November 2013 Svetlana London gave a talk at the seminar "Russian disputes in London - for how much longer ?" arranged by Stephenson Harwood. Svetlana discussed the challenges that lawyers and clients face when dealing with Russian law in international transactions.

October 2013

International Employment seminar, London

On 14 October 2013 Svetlana London gave a talk at the Whistleblowing Panel organised by New York State Bar Association / American Bar Association / Law Society at the session "International Developments in whistleblowing laws: cashing in on tipping off - will a US style of bounty rewards soon be making its way across the Atlantic?"

Svetlana's talk focused on whistleblowing in Russia. In particular, Svetlana addressed legal and cultural issues, current legislation and perspectives for further development of whistleblowing practices in Russia.

September 2013

The Legal 500 Awards 2013 lists the firm (then known as MGAP UK) as a top tier firm.

In 2013 The Legal 500 UK Awards recognised our firm as a Tier 1 Foreign Law Firm in London for Russia. The Legal 500 in their UK edition referred to our firm as follows:

Legal Forum, Almaty, Kazakhstan

Elena Ivanova, senior associate at the firm, gave a speech at the Legal Forum in Almaty, Kazakhstan, covering the specifics of court proceedings with the participation of Kazakh and Russian clients in state courts and arbitration in London. The Forum united lawyers from leading Kazakh law firms as well as in-house lawyers from large Kazakh companies.

Workshop for Olswang LLP "Working with Russian clients", London

On 12 September 2013 we ran a workshop "Working with Russian clients". The workshop included practical advice and information on working with Russian clients, a short historical background to Russian clients, wealth and aspects of working with Russia-related matters. Special attention was paid to questions of KYC procedure, source of wealth and background check with respect to Russian clients.

Workshop on amendments to Russian currency control law, London

In March 2013 we ran a workshop for investment bankers on recent amendments to Russian currency control law. It included reports by the firm's partner Svetlana London and senior associates covering recent amendments requiring disclosure by Russian residents holding funds in foreign banks.

October 2012

Our firm hosted a Champagne reception to celebrate the fifth anniversary

The event was staged at the historic Staple Inn Hall, in High Holborn, which was established as an Inn of Chancery in 1585.

More than 100 invited guests, including friends, clients and business colleagues we have worked with over the years, attended the venue on September 17. The purpose of the event was to mark the establishment of our operations in London in 2007.

The evening's entertainment was provided by acclaimed Australian tenor Andrew Goodwin who moved to Russia in 1999. He studied voice at the St. Petersburg State Rimsky Korsakov Conservatoire, graduating in June, 2005. Andrew, ably accompanied by Maria Timofeeva, performed a number of well-received recitals on the night. The Mallard Oboe Trio, (Anna Cooper: Cor Anglais; Susan Frost: Oboe; Laura Manning: Oboe) also entertained the delighted guests with a number of classical pieces. The well-known trio were formed in 1987 and have recently played at the Guildhall, London, at an event attended by the Lord Mayor of London.

During the course of the highly appreciated event, guests also had the opportunity to meet informally members of our teams from both London and Moscow.

Svetlana London said: "The evening was a great success and we welcomed the opportunity to thank friends, colleagues, clients and business associates for their loyalty and support over the last five years and to further strengthen our relationships."

June 2011

We host a seminar for English lawyers and advocates on acknowledgement and execution of foreign courts' decisions in Russia

The seminar was held in Moscow. Speakers included English lawyers and advocates specialising in international commercial arbitrage; participating in the seminar were clients and partners of our firm. The discussion covered issues faced by parties intending to enforce English or Russian court decisions and arbitrage. The seminar was followed by a reception.

June 2010

Publication of Getting the Deal Through. Securities Finance 2010 (Russia)

The Article "Securities Finance" Russia, by Svetlana London and Alexander Yurchik was published in Getting the Deal Through - Securities Finance 2010 edition, which was launched at IBA 27th Annual International Financial Law Conference in Warsaw, Poland in May 2010.

The edition provides an international analysis in key areas of law and policy for corporate counsels, cross-border legal practitioners and business people to keep them abreast on the basic securities legal issues and developments in the world's major jurisdictions.

January 2009

We contribute to Legal Services Directory of the Law Society Gazette 2009

The article "World in Action" was published on 25th January 2009. It provides a review of legal developments around the world and outlines how law firms interact across international boundaries. We are grateful to Tatiana Menshenina and Svetlana London for their input in preparing this article.

Opportunities: Russia’s Blossoming Creative Industries Environment

The Own-it partnership in collaboration with the Creative Industries Observatory and UK Trade & Investment invited our team onto their panel of experts at their October event covering opportunities in Russia for the creative industries held at Pushkin House, central London.

Representing our firm was Svetlana London. Her presentation covered the legal issues arising for UK creative companies and individuals doing business in Russia.

Also representing our firm was Tatiana Menshenina, who advised generally on doing business with Russia and on precautions that should be taken when entering into contracts with Russian companies.
